The Fernwood Botanical Garden will host the Spring Garden Market – Leader Publications

NILES – A local botanical garden and nature preserve are ushering in the spring season with a horticultural event for the enjoyment of the community.

Fernwood Botanical Garden, 13988 Range Line Rd, Niles, will host its annual Spring Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. The vendor tent will be open exclusively to Fernwood members from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The market – returning after a two-year COVID-induced hiatus – features a wide variety of Fernwood-grown plants for sale as well as local vendors specializing in unique and artfully grown plant material and handcrafted artwork for the garden. Fernwood Members will receive a discount on Fernwood plant products.

The event is free with Fernwood admission, which is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors 65 and older and students with school ID, $5 for military, and children ages 5 to 17 and free for children four and under.

“We’ve been doing this for years,” said Fernwood’s director of development and external relations, Elaine Rowland. “Fernwood has a long history of selling spring plants. A few years ago, we improved this event and made it a real spring market. When people come to Fernwood on this day, they are sure to find something to take away with. Many people wait for the garden market to take place to buy their plants for the season.

According to Rowland, a team of botanical experts and volunteers from Fernwood will also be on hand to answer questions and provide cultivation advice.

“It’s really helpful,” Rowland said. “[Guests] can tell our people, “I have lots of shade”, “I have lots of sun”, things like that, and our staff and volunteers are more than happy to help. »

Established in 1964, Fernwood consists of 105 acres of cultivated gardens and natural areas with woodlands, ravines, wetlands and frontage on the St. Joseph River. The garden is open year-round for Michiana residents to enjoy.

Rowland can’t wait to see guests and vendors return for the Spring Garden Market.

“I love it, it feels like the kick off of our green season,” she said. “It’s a kick-off to being outdoors and a wonderful time to be out in the gardens. It’s something people look forward to every two years. We had to take a two-year break on this event, so we’re excited to bring him back.
