I arrived at the cafe in the Squires Garden Center shortly after noon on Wednesday April 6th and was surprised to see the place thriving, full of families, older and younger couples as well as a hat oddity trapper hooked to two phones. , an A5 notepad and a pen (that’s me).
Guess I just didn’t expect a midweek lunch at a garden center in West Horsley, Leatherhead to be busy. Then the penny fell that it was the Easter holidays, so all the families.
I still liked the atmosphere and noted the olive green color of the walls behind the counter and the woodwork that I wouldn’t mind in my 1990s kitchen, one day in ruins. The lighting of the candelabras too.

I’ll go straight there and say the food was delicious – the fifteen minute wait to order plus a 25 minute wait afterwards. Turns out they have an order taking system where you have to wait your turn for your order to be taken at the table (it was table service only).
It’s hard to mess with this logic, because you normally wouldn’t skip a line when ordering at a checkout. But then finding out that there was still a half hour wait for food when ordering was almost too much for my intentionally empty stomach.
Luckily my deluxe hot chocolate (with a flake, cream and marshmallows) arrived within about five minutes, which went down like hot silk and filled me up until the food arrived. I had the misty pork cider gammon and the fried egg and the total cost of my meal and drink was £15.40.
I loved the neat presentation of the food and the creamy mustard and parsley sauce over the green beans was a real winner. I just wanted more.
The rest of the menu also looked impressive, from the sweet potato curry with rare pancetta and leeks and the mint lamb bhaji burger – the drinks menu also sold wine and beer. I kind of forgot I was only in a garden center cafe for a while.
Next time I come I’ll make sure it’s in the morning, and maybe not during a busy half session, so I can try the breakfast menu. The staff, I counted four on the floor and one behind the counter, also deserve a mention as they were as friendly and welcoming as you would expect in the restaurant.
