How to grow potatoes?

There are several ways to grow potatoes.

We are going to teach you two ways to do it, one is described as the easiest and the other as the cheapest.

The cheapest way is:

  • Prepare the ground by removing weeds and hauling them over to create a smooth surface for you to work on.
  • Dig straight, shallow trenches two to three feet apart and plant the potatoes 12 inches apart.
  • Cover at least three inches of soil.
  • Once the shoots have reached 10 to 12 inches in height, use a shovel or hoe to remove the soil between the rows and mound it against the clearances. This will bury the stems halfway.
  • Repeat throughout the season to ensure tubers are covered.

It is the cheapest way because you don’t need to buy anything, you just need to have land and soil.

Of course, your crops will also depend on the quality of the soil you have.

In places where the floor is dirtier, you may want to reconsider your option.

You can try the easiest way which is to use grow bags.

These bags are made from heavy and dense polypropylene to ensure the best results.

What you need to do is:

  • Put some soil-compost mix in the bottom of the bag and plant three or four pieces of seed potatoes.
  • Then cover the seeds with three inches of soil.
  • Keep adding soil as the plants grow until the bag is finally full.
  • To harvest, simply turn the bag on its side and empty the crops.

These bags are durable and will give you good value for your money.

They are easy to store and thanks to their dark color, they help the seed to have rapid and early growth thanks to heat capture.

They also don’t take up much space when planting.

What is the best way to plant them?

It’s always best to plant potatoes 12 inches apart and three inches deep below the ground.

The distance between the seeds will ensure that the potatoes have room to grow and that they don’t steal nutrients from each other, ensuring that your grown crops are healthy and of the best quality.

They also need to be deep under the ground because of the heat.

The more heat the potatoes absorb, the faster they grow.

How long does it take to grow potatoes?

It depends on how much you want the potatoes to grow.

If you want small new potatoes, they will take about ten weeks at least to grow.

On the other hand, if you want normal sized potatoes, it will take around 80-100 days for the potatoes to fully ripen.

It also depends on the planting technique you use and the environment you are planting in.

Remember that soil also affects growth, so if you have poor quality soil it may take longer or they may not be as good as expected.

Can you grow potatoes from store bought potatoes?

Yes you can.

If you have potatoes that are starting to sprout, you can use them to produce healthy crops.

So don’t think about throwing them away, instead use them to make new potatoes that are safe to eat.

The only downside to store-bought potatoes is that, unlike seed potatoes, they are not certified disease-free.

Store potatoes might have been loaded with pathogens such as light and fusarium.

These could damage your soil and then affect any other crops you might be growing as well.

It will end up costing you to replace the soil with healthy soil too.
