SD Discovery Center Treehouse exhibit opens, some students from Pierre and Stanley County bring trees to plant as part of Arbor Day celebrations

Pierre’s SD Discovery Center is celebrating the opening of its new treehouse by staying open until 6 p.m. today (an additional hour) in honor of Arbor Day in South Dakota (29 April 2022).

As part of Arbor Day activities, some elementary school students in Pierre and Stanley counties received a bare root tree to take home and plant.

Art Smith is a longtime member of the Pierre City Tree Board of Directors and owner of the East Pierre Landscape and Garden Center. He says distributed trees are one of his favorites.

Also today, a new 8-foot poplar tree was planted at Mayor’s Grove. This tree is added as part of the Tree City United States program.

Finally, at 5:30 p.m., the Rotary Club of Pierre-Fort Pierre will hold an evening open to the public. Trees with bare roots will be made available to participants for planting and there will be a dedication of the exhibition with a plaque.
