Optimistic garden centers for spring 2021

Last spring, most garden centers were only doing phone orders and curbside pickups. This year, avid gardeners put on their masks and shop in person.

HAZEL DELL, Wash. – It’s sunny, and lots of it this week. We can already see the effect of spring: green grass, daffodils. And, for many, there is gardening to be done.

Angie Webster is happy to see clients come to her place of work in Yard ‘N Garden Land in Clark County.

“People are outside, they are shopping, they are in their garden. They buy shrubs, trees, plants, flowers and pots, they buy everything, ”Webster said.

This spring is different from last year when the yard and garden center were closed to customers. Only phone orders and curbside service were available last April. Now they are open to all wonderful browsers.

Diana Piel prepares her gardens.

“Yesterday I went to the tiller and brought new soil and so I’m planting a lot of flowers,” Piel said. On Monday, she was shopping for plants. “I had my vaccine, which I suggest everyone do, and it makes me feel a little better to be outside.”

We did not get out of the woods. But there is another attitude in the air. And it’s good for business.

“Oh, I think it feels good for us too,” said store manager Tim Shull. “Just by having everyone back here, the weather was, of course, perfect. It’s fun to see a lot of old clients and there are a lot of new people; I think gardening has really grown well over the past couple of seasons.

Shull said the company needed masks, cart wiping, and surveillance capability.

Nurseries, including Yard ‘N Garden Land, have tomatoes and other vegetables. But it is important to remember that despite the good weather now, it is still the beginning of spring.

“It gets a little cold at night so we have our frost protection panels and we really try to stick with that because you never know what might happen to them,” Webster said.

It is difficult to be patient, with a pandemic and with the planting of the garden. But patience can pay off.

“You know it’s so good and we feel so optimistic because, number one: we had our two shots and we’re just happy that people are wearing their masks and allowing us to be here to do it all,” “said customer Lea Ann Stewart, who added,” Try me in August and I’ll be even better. “
